Opioids, prescription drugs used to treat pain, have negative effects when taken long-term such as dependence and tolerance. The Internet is an easy way for consumers to purchase opioids even without a prescription. Per a recent study, illegal online pharmacies are using Twitter to promote prescription drug abuse of controlled substances. Co-author, Timothy Mackey, states, “This study is the first to establish an empirical link between Twitter content and illicit online pharmacies which promote the illegal sale of drugs that have significant abuse potential.”
